On the Fondamenta Nani, a stone’s throw from Campo di San Trovaso and the famous squero (boatyard) where gondolas are born, this 15th-century pointed-arch facade is one of the oldest buildings on the rio. It was a palace of the Barbarigo — the family of the two brother doges, Marco and Agostino, who, Tassini recalls, were both born here — and came to the Nani as a wedding dowry: Elena, daughter of Doge Agostino, brought it to her husband Giorgio Nani, and their son Bernardo founded the ’di San Trovaso’ branch here.
