At San Stae, a stone’s throw from the Grand Canal, stands a palace that was for centuries the home of the San Stae branch of the Mocenigo — the family that gave Venice no fewer than seven doges. The branch split off from the Mocenigo of San Samuele when Nicolò, brother of the doge Alvise I, left the San Stae properties to his sons by will.
