That wall is not decorated: it is a graph. The horizontal blue lines crossing it for about a hundred metres mark the average sea level forecast for Venice year by year, from today to 2200. Higher up the extreme waves are painted in symbolic form, and scattered on the wall are the variables and mathematical formulas that describe the rise of the waters, including the parts per million of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
