In this calle of the sestiere of Santa Croce, a stone’s throw from San Simeone Grande, hides a legal word of old Venice: ’liste’ were the streets adjoining a foreign ambassador’s palazzo, and they enjoyed immunity — here the constables could arrest no one, as in a sacred asylum. This was the lista of the imperial ambassador, who resided in the destroyed Palazzo Correr on the nearby Riva di Biasio.
