The Fondamenta Rossa runs along the rio Briati in Dorsoduro, in the Carmini district, not far from Campo Santa Margherita. Its name comes from the Ponte Rosso that closes it — the one that leaps to the other bank, the Fondamenta dei Cereri of the old candle-makers — and, earlier still, from the original colour of the walls: the houses overlooking it are still largely red today.
