The Fondamenta delle Zattere is Dorsoduro’s long, sunlit waterfront, running for over a kilometre along the Giudecca Canal, from Punta della Dogana to the Stazione Marittima. It was apparently once called la Carbonaria, after the coal cargoes unloaded here. Built by decree on 8 February 1519, the waterfront later took its name from the timber rafts that came down the rivers of the Veneto and moored along this shore.
