On the south side of Campo San Polo, among the houses overlooking the vera da pozzo (well-head), there is a pharmacy that the College of Apothecaries was already recording in 1586 under the name it still bears today: ’Alla Colonna e Mezza’ (’At the Column and a Half’). And that name is carved on the wall, in a stone medallion beside the shop window: one whole column and a second column cut in half.
