Pause in Campo San Polo and take it in: this is Venice’s largest campo (Venetian square), second only to Piazza San Marco among the city’s open spaces. Originally, crops were grown here and animals grazed. In 1493 the ground was paved, and an octagonal wellhead of Istrian stone was placed at its centre.
