The vast campo (square) of the Gesuiti is dominated by the church that the Society of Jesus intended as a statement of its return. Expelled during the Interdict of 1606, the Jesuits came back only in 1657, buying the old church of the Crociferi from Carlo Caraffa, bishop of Aversa and papal legate, for 50,000 ducats. The church had been founded in 1148 by the Gussoni family, with a hospital for the poor; fires destroyed it in 1214 and 1514.
