Campo dei Gesuiti: the church and, beside it, the former convent building where the Scuola dei Sartori stood — the scissors are in the ovals above the twin windows, to be sought up close Photo: Nemo bis, Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 3.0
On the façade of the building beside the church of the Gesuiti someone, four centuries ago, carved the pride of a guild: two open pairs of scissors, sculpted inside two ovals hollowed into the windows’ architrave. It is the emblem of the Sartori, Venice’s tailors’ guild, and that building — a piece of the former Crociferi convent — was the seat of their devotional school.
