At the end of the Mercerie, a step from Rialto, Campo San Salvador is one of the few places in Venice where you can read the Risorgimento in the open air. At the centre, at the entrance to Calle Larga Mazzini, rises a marble column erected in 1898 for the seventeen months of Daniele Manin’s republic: the 1848-49 revolt that pitted Venice against the Austrian occupation until the surrender.
