One of the largest and most important churches in Venice, facing its namesake campo (a Venetian square) a stone’s throw from the Merceria. Tradition traces it back to the 7th century, founded by the Carosii and Gattolosi families at the urging of the legendary bishop St Magnus, and it is said to have had a floor of iron grates over running water, like the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem.
