The squero is the rowing-boat yard: a sloping plane that runs down into the rio for hauling out and launching, and behind it the tesa, the open wooden shed where work goes on under cover. In the days of the Serenissima they were everywhere — the Calle del Squero still recall them — and the Giudecca, on the side facing the open lagoon, had several. Today six survive in all of Venice, and two are here.
