Gothic fragments — arches, portals and walls from the great church of Santa Maria dei Servi — emerge along the Fondamenta Daniele Canal, beside the rio dei Servi. The Servites arrived in Venice in 1316 and, with the help of the layman Giovanni d’Avanzo, laid the first stone on 24 March 1318. The church was consecrated in 1491.
