The Campo dei Santi Giovanni e Paolo (a campo is a Venetian square) — ’San Zanipolo’ for the Venetians — is, after St Mark’s Square, the most monumental in the city: from here passed the coffins of the doges and dignitaries for the last honours in the great church, and here the crowd gathered for solemn ceremonies, as when in 1782 Pope Pius VI blessed it from a loggia erected against the Scuola di San Marco.
