A quiet fondamenta (canalside walkway) along the rio dei Servi (a small canal), with an iron parapet on stone pillars and three little landing steps: it owes its name not to a doge nor an admiral, but to a priest — Monsignor Daniele Canal, who on the island of the great destroyed church of the Servi di Maria built one of the most original charitable institutions of 19th-century Venice.
