The little church of the Cappuccine seen from the rio di San Girolamo: the wooden cross is planted on the edge of the fondamenta, just past the church’s west corner Photo: Abxbay, Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 4.0
On the bank of the rio, where the fondamenta bends towards the lagoon, stands a wooden cross six metres tall. In Venice crosses almost always stand on churches or in campi; this one, instead, is here on the bank, with the water a couple of steps away. The wood is dark, worn by wind and salt, on a base of white stone.
