At the far end of the Cannaregio fondamenta (canalside walkway), opposite San Giobbe, the church of Santa Maria delle Penitenti has remained as it was when the money ran out: bare, elegant all the same, the work of Giorgio Massari. Behind it opens the Pio Loco delle Penitenti, dedicated to the Patronage of the Virgin: the institution that took in the ’fallen women’ who asked for another life.
