On the Zattere, facing the Giudecca Canal, two churches stand side by side, linked by a shared history: the small Santa Maria della Visitazione, Venice’s first Renaissance church, begun in 1494, and the grand Santa Maria del Rosario, known as the Gesuati, built between 1726 and 1736 by Giorgio Massari for the Dominicans who took over from the suppressed Poveri Gesuati.
