Just beyond the church of the Miracoli, Campo Santa Maria Nuova opens up: a bright, everyday square in Cannaregio that holds an absence. The ancient parish church of Santa Maria Nova once stood here. Tradition says it was founded in 971, rebuilt several times and demolished in 1852; all that remains are Visentini’s drawings and works now scattered among museums.
