On the Grand Canal, the Ca’ d’Oro looks like lace carved in stone. Marino Contarini had it built between 1421 and 1440 on the remains of a Veneto-Byzantine house belonging to the Zen family. Matteo Raverti’s Lombard craftsmen and the Venetian workshops of Giovanni and Bartolomeo Bon worked on it — the same names behind the Doge’s Palace.
