In the heart of San Polo, the Basilica of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari announces itself with a brick façade, a severe bell tower and an interior capable of making the city seem small. The name comes from the friars minor, who arrived in Venice shortly after 1220: the first church rose on reclaimed land, but the growth of the community made a much larger building necessary.
