The Teatro Malibran is the oldest theatre in Venice still active: the Grimani brothers built it from 1674 and opened it at carnival 1678 under the name Teatro San Giovanni Grisostomo, on the ashes of the Polo houses destroyed by the great fire of 1597 — and on the outer front the Veneto-Byzantine arches of that vanished world still survive.
