On campo San Rocco (a campo is a Venetian square), beside the church of the same name, stands the seat of Venice’s richest lay confraternity: founded in 1478 as a scuola of ’battuti’ (flagellant lay brothers) dedicated to St Roch, the thaumaturge pilgrim invoked against the plague, it became a Scuola Grande just two years later and in 1485 received the saint’s very body.
