At the corner of the Rio della Panada (a Venetian canal) and the Rio di San Canciano, at the end of the Fondamenta Sanudo, Palazzo Soranzo-Van Axel is one of Venice’s most imposing Gothic palaces — yet guidebooks scarcely mentioned it before the 19th century. The Soranzo built it between 1473 and 1479 over an earlier Veneto-Byzantine house belonging to the Gradenigo.
