In 1581 an apostolic visitation ordered the door of the church of San Bartolomeo that faced the campo (square) to be walled up. The old portico was divided into shops and the church was left enclosed among the houses, with its entrance at the side on the Salizada Pio X (one of the city’s first paved streets). On the street that 16th-century portal remains, with a statue of St Bartholomew in the pediment.
