This is the commercial heart of Venice, the point where all the streets that matter cross: the Mercerie towards San Marco, the Rialto Bridge, the Fondaco dei Tedeschi, the Strada Nova. The Venetians call it simply San Bortolo, or Campo Goldoni, after the statue of the playwright who has kept watch at the centre since 1883.
