At the foot of the Ponte dei Mendicanti, where the rio opens onto the northern lagoon, Palazzo Merati stretches along the Fondamenta Nuove, paved in 1589 under Doge Pasquale Cicogna. The complex of 17th-century twin buildings, linked by raised passages, was bought by the Merati in 1690.
