On the rio della Madonna dell’Orto stands a palace that Venetians simply call the Casa del Cammello (House of the Camel). It owes the name to a bas-relief on the façade: a man in a turban dragging a beast loaded with goods. It is Palazzo Mastelli, the house of three merchant brothers come from the Morea, Rioba, Sandi and Afani, whom the Venetians simply called ’i Mori’ (the Moors).
