Standing straight up out of the water, planted on a pole in front of the gondola jetty, is a small cabin of carved wood painted green: a sharp spire, twisted little columns at the corners, small windows closed by coloured glass. Inside is a statuette of the Madonna. The Venetians call it the madonnina del ferale, and it is not a votive capitello (a street shrine) like the others: it is the lamp of a waterborne station.
