The Fondamenta del Dose runs along the rio di Santa Marina, in the Castello district, between Campo Santa Marina and Santa Maria Formosa: a quiet canal enclosed between tall houses and stone bridges. The name, Tassini explains, comes from the palace where Doge Nicolò Marcello was born — ’del Dose’, that is, ’of the doge’ — and the Marcello coat of arms, carved on the walls, testifies that the family owned other buildings in this area.
