On the little campo (square) halfway between Rialto and San Zaccaria stands San Lio, one of the oldest churches in Venice: the Badoer family founded it in the 9th century, dedicating it to St Catherine, and in 1054 it was dedicated to Pope Leo IX — San Lio in Venetian — who at the Roman council had defended the cause of the patriarchate of Grado against Gotebald, patriarch of Aquileia, and who, on coming to Venice, had granted privileges to the ducal basilica and other churches.
