This church was born from a promise. In the summer of 1576 the plague was devouring Venice — fifty thousand dead in two years, almost one inhabitant in three — and on 4 September the Senate, backed into a corner, resolved unanimously: if the city is saved, a church dedicated to the Redeemer will rise, and the doge will visit it every year in procession.
