On the Giudecca waterfront, facing the Bacino di San Marco, stands a palace that seems to have stepped out of the Venetian 14th century: red brick, white pinnacles and three huge ogival windows flung open on the canal. In fact it dates from the 20th century, and is perhaps the last true palace built here: the painter Mario de Maria designed it for himself, between 1912 and 1913, as a house and studio.
