Opposite the station, on the bank of the Grand Canal, almost everyone looks at the green dome of San Simeone Piccolo and few notice the house beside it. Yet Casa Adoldo is one of the most legible palazzi in Venice: rebuilt in 1520, it bears on its doors marble panels with Latin inscriptions — which for centuries no guidebook bothered to explain — supported by little figures of the apostles Simeon and Jude, which tell of Lucia Adoldo’s donation to the parish — a ’humble and tottering’ house, says the marble, bequeathed in 1345 — and the reconstruction commissioned by Vittore Spiera.
