One of the widest streets of the sestiere (district) runs from Campo Santa Maria Nova towards Campo Santi Giovanni e Paolo: it is Calle Larga Giacinto Gallina, dedicated to the Venetian playwright who in the 19th century took up Goldoni’s legacy. The street is a fresco of everyday Venice: sotoporteghi (covered passageways), fondamente (canalside walkways) along the rio, the municipal school building that bears his very name.
