Stop in Campo San Pietro, at the north-eastern edge of Castello: here Venice keeps its ancient cathedral, isolated in a landscape of water, grass and low houses. The island was called Olivolo and was one of the first religious centres of the lagoon; after a fire in 1120 the church took on a larger form, and from 1451 it housed the seat of the Venetian patriarchate.
