The Campo dell’Abbazia della Misericordia is not a single monument, but a small atlas of religious and civil Venice. The church began as Santa Maria di Val Verde, named after the grassy ground on which it rose: a record of it already existed in 936, and tradition has it founded in 939 by Cesare dei Giulii known as Andreardo - or by the Giulia and Moro families together - for the hermits who later became friars, probably Augustinians.
