It looks like a giant window closed by a grille, but it is a door: in fact, for centuries it was THE door of the Basilica. When there was no pavement in front of the church but water, those arriving by the lagoon entered here, through the Porta da Mar. During the foundation works the very poles to which the boats were tied came back to light, together with the remains of a landing stairway.
