The Ponte Loredan is a wooden footbridge — about thirteen metres long, set on two wooden piles — that spans the rio de la Madona de l’Orto, connecting the fondamenta of northern Cannaregio with the area of the former Fatebenefratelli hospital: a strategic pedestrian crossing, as the City Council points out. The name comes from the nearby Calle Loredan and from the family, which the chroniclers even traced back to Mucius Scaevola and which gave the Republic three doges and great admirals: the most famous, Pietro, three times general da mar, conquered half of Dalmatia, in 1416 routed the Turks at Gallipoli taking fifteen galleys from them, and in 1431, in the Gulf of Rapallo, humbled the Milanese and Genoese, capturing General Spinola; his son Giacomo, also an admiral, set fire to twenty-two enemy ships in 1453.
